About

MacKids Walk & Wheel is an annual tradition for patients, families and supporters of McMaster Children’s Hospital, including Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre.

MacKids Walk & Wheel will be a virtual event in 2021. Participants are encouraged to choose their own adventure and complete their activity anytime from June 4 to 13.

Ways to Participate

This year, we are encouraging participants to choose their own walking or wheeling adventure! Below are some suggested adventures, but we also encourage you to create your own! Some ideas include:

  • Walking 7 km – The distance from McMaster Children’s Hospital to Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre
  • Go for a 45-minute bike ride – The average time of a child’s MRI scan
  • Commit to walking four to six times over 10 days – On average, a child wears a cast for four to six weeks to treat a broken bone
  • Choose an adventure with a personal connection: hours mom was in labour, number of clinical appointments, child’s jersey number – the sky’s the limit!

Registration

All participants (children, youth and adults) are encouraged to register online. It’s free for everyone! Once you are registered, you have access to the fundraising platform and will be eligible for great prizes.

Reminder

A friendly reminder for all our participants who will be wheeling during their adventure to wear a helmet when biking, and additional safety gear (knee pads, etc.) if you are rollerblading or skate boarding.

Fundraising

All participants are encouraged to fundraise. Once registered, you’ll have access to a personalized participant centre where you can send emails to request support, view your progress and send thank-you emails. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers (see below for details and regulations).

Your Dollars at Work

When you fundraise for MacKids Walk & Wheel, you help us purchase the best equipment and enable specialized treatment and services for children and youth in our region. Visit Mackids.ca to learn more about McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation.

This year the funds will be directed towards 3 pieces of equipment, including a Uroflow System, Point Of Care Ultrasound System (POCUS), and a FEES Device.

All three of these pieces of equipment are used in conjunction with patient exams to provide diagnosis and offer the clinical teams real time information on their patients, rather than needing to schedule more comprehensive diagnostic imaging tests.
