The Jonathan Brown Foundation

Jonny PhotoThe Jonathan Brown Foundation was established in November of 2021 in honour and memory of Jonathan Brown ("Jonny") who passed away at the tender age of 19. Jonathan was a gregarious, fun-loving young man who relished gaming and playing sports with his friends, particularly hockey. He played rep hockey all his life, entertaining everyone with his amazing puck handling skills, passing skills and his ability to play just as well on his knees as on his skates.

In February 2019, Jonathan began to complain about back pain, thinking it was due to a fall. Eventually, the doctors were able to determine the root of the problem. Jonathan had a tumour at the top of his right femur near the hip joint.  Jonny was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. He was immediately referred to the pediatric oncology team at McMaster Children's Hospital where a treatment plan was developed.

For more than two years he bravely battled the painful disease, never giving up hope, always maintaining his dry sense of humour and rarely, if ever, complaining about his condition. Although Jonny endured extensive treatment including hip replacement surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, he felt safe and at home at McMaster Children's Hospital. The wonderful and dedicated staff, including oncologists, nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, social workers and child life specialists, served as Jon's second family.

Sadly, Jonny eventually lost his battle with Ewing's Sarcoma and passed away on October 15th, 2021 but his bravery, strength and energy lives on with all the people that he touched in his short life. The Jonathan Brown Foundation hopes to give back to McMaster Children's Hospital in honour of Jonny and hopefully we can make a small difference in the life of another child afflicted with an untimely condition. Jonny would wholeheartedly approve!
