So very thankful
As most of you know, I was in a cycling accident in September. Though I was extremely lucky, I did have a number of injuries. Thankfully, I have recovered really well and have been able to return to the activities I love - due in large part to the support provided by you, my friends and family, but also due to the exceptional treatment I received at Hamilton General Hospital - the trauma ER, the trauma unit, neurology for my spinal surgery and orthopedics for my other fractures.
During my stay on the trauma floor, my physiotherapist Matthew told me about Strides for the General - an annual fundraiser run/walk for the hospital. He told me that he captains the trauma team and that the team that raises the most funds is allocated funds to spend in their unit as they best see fit to help their patients. Though at that time he was helping me first sit up, then stand and then take my first few steps post accident, I knew I wanted to participate in the next run (which happens to be almost a year to the day from my accident) and raise funds for the trauma team, who had done so much for me.
I know we often hear complaints about our health care system, but I can tell you that in that trauma, I felt that I received the best care and received it immediately. Early in my treatment and many times since, Dean and I have discussed how fortunate we were that never once during my time in the hospital did we have to worry about how much my treatment was costing and whether we would have to mortgage our house to pay for my treatment.
Running in and fundraising for the Strides for the General is a way for me to give a little back for all that the wonderful staff at the General gave me. Please consider sponsoring me for this run and help support the amazing work this hospital and trauma unit does day in and day out. Or perhaps you even want to run or walk with me on September 14 in Hamilton? You have already been on my team thoughout this journey, but I would love to have you on the Trauma Troopers Strides for the General team also!
